The death of Gwen Stacy in Amazing Spiderman #121 (1973) marks the ending of the Silver Age of Comic Books. Not only was this the first time a superhero failed so catastrophically and with such consequences, but also never before did a superhero’s loved one die so violently and so suddenly. The fact that, arguably, it was through an error of Spider-man himself that she died was simply something that we had never seen before and certainly kicked up some controversy.
